Journaling with Yoga

~ Travel Through Yoga with Clarity ~

Journaling is a powerful tool that we can use to help process the practice of life – and that includes your Yin Yoga practice. You might be thinking “hang on a minute, how do you practice Yoga and journal at the same time?”. Well, there are many ways. First of all, Yoga practice isn’t just asana practice. It is much wider and deeper than that. Some other practices Yoga includes are pranayama, meditation and mindful living. Secondly, Yoga has multiple different approaches (styles) and some of these include Yin Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and Yoga Nidra. Thirdly, there are different branches of Yoga which include Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Raja Yoga to name a few.

All of these styles and approaches will take you on a Yoga Journey and the question is – how would you like to process this journey into your mind, spirit and soul?

Journaling is the act of free writing thoughts and feelings on paper

There are several types of journaling:

  1. Diary entries about your day
  2. Free writing about thoughts and emotions
  3. Bullet journals are simple action lists
  4. Free drawing whatever comes into your mind

Writing down your thoughts and feelings is a gateway to:

  • Becoming aware of your thoughts, feelings and energy
  • Becoming aware of the state of your mental and emotional well-being
  • Developing mindfulness
  • Helping us to stand back and observe
  • Helping us not engage
  • Allowing emotions to arise to pass away
  • Helping us rise above our monkey mind
  • Raising our vibration in the direction of our life
  • Reframing the way in which we chose to move forward

Journaling is a powerful tool to use either by itself or in combination with Yoga. Due to the lower brain waves that we induce in a Yin Yoga practice, that help access to subconscious mind connection, the mental process of journaling can bring a level of inner wisdom, empowerment and clarity that we sometimes lack on the surface level.

Specifically journaling after a Yin Yoga session, your brain will receive help in processing things that arose during the practice, consciously or unconsciously, and will help you let them pass through you, rather than cling to you.
