Aromatherapy and Yin Yoga

~ Using Essential Oils to Enhance Your Yin Yoga Journey ~

Written by Anna Caldwell

Before we get into the depth of magic that essential oils have to offer you. I have some questions for you….

1. Are you seeking to create habits more in alignment with your desire to be relaxed but not sure how?
2. Do you wish you could recreate that “bliss state” you feel after going to your local yoga studio in your own home?

Well, friend, I’m glad you found this piece of writing because I have some magic to share with you!

You may have heard these words before, you may have even experienced some of their magic. What I am referring to, of course, are essential oils and aromatherapy. Essential oils are truly some of the most potent natural healing agents on our Earth. They are a great option if you want to move away from pharmaceutical solutions to your well-being and take a more natural approach to your health, relaxation and joy. We like to call essential oils little pocket-potions of nature’s magic. These oils are extracted compounds of plants and (usually) steam-distilled to  produced pure, concentrated essences of the plants in oil form.

Essential Oils have been used for thousands of years in indigenous ceremonies and rituals and are an amazing way to enhance a Yin Yoga class. Plants have always existed, ready to work in tandem with the human body. After all, we are
made of the same fundamental components right?

In working with these holistic medicines, we are connecting back to our roots and like you or me, plants have unique characteristics and personalities that we can get to know. In doing so, we are brought closer to Nature and
ultimately our “capital-S Selves.” The age of thinking we are separate from the plant world is over, my dear friend.

There are many reasons why and ways in which you can begin to bring aromatherapy and
essential oils into your home and your Yoga Journey. Some of the reasons include:

– Boosting our immune system by fortifying our body’s natural response system, as well as being antimicrobial and some antiviral
– Treating headaches or musculoskeletal tension
– Treating congestion or coughs
Promoting deep and restful sleep
Relieving stress and anxiety
– Energy imbalances
Emotional balancing (feel more grounded, calm and centered)

From a physiological perspective, inhalation is the easiest, most efficient way of bringing the power of aromatherapy into our bodies. Some of these ways include:
– Hot baths (make sure to add the oil to an emulsifier first, ¼ cup of milk is a great option)
– Diffusers
– Oil for skin (1-3% Essential Oil to carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed)

And let me be clear that this list is only the beginning. While these plant essences are powerful and concentrated, their benefits when used in a controlled and safe manner can truly enhance our lives and Yoga practice in profound ways.

I once heard someone say that they envied yoga teachers for how “peacefully they experienced life” and “how wonderful it must be to not experience anxiety.” To this, my jaw dropped! No matter what profession we have, no matter what we do in life, where we are, who we are, no one (I repeat no human soul on this earth) is exempt from all of the beautiful fluctuations of the
human experience.

From anxiety to insomnia to depression to bliss…this is a gentle reminder that we ALL experience it ALL. As a wellness practitioner, I hope to make the healing benefits of aromatherapy and essential oils accessible to other people in the hopes that it may enhance their lives the way it has mine and this is exactly what we are doing in two of our magical Yoga retreat events:
