What is it Like Training In Yin Yoga & Yoga Nidra?

By Anna Caldwell

A journey in Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra is very much a journey into the many layers of consciousness and the layers of mind. This is the space in which yoga teachers transcend their teaching. This course is a dive into the lower brainwaves states of Yoga Nidra to heighten consciousness within the illuminating path of Yin Yoga.

What is Yoga Nidra? In Sanskrit, Nidra means sleep so Yoga Nidra is “yogic sleep.” This practice brings relaxation to a whole new level. Yoga Nidra is an immersion into an ancient practice of yoga, much like other styles you may have practiced. Yoga Nidra was first mentioned in the ancient Upanishad texts and later in the Hindu classic Mahabharata by Lord Krishna. Whether the history is of pertinence to you or not, the benefits are for everyone! It is said that one hour of a Yoga Nidra practice is equal to the benefits of four hours of regular sleep. It is one of the easiest practices to incorporate into your life and can be practiced by anyone, anytime no matter what their physical state is. It is a practice of the mind that then filters its benefits subtly and surely into the body and psyche of the practitioner. This is a powerful tool for teachers to gain that are seeking to bring more deep relaxation and meditative benefits to their offerings.

Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra are the perfect compliment to one another, as Yoga Nidra, just like yin, creates a space for us to explore ourselves in our most relaxed state. It is a judgement-free zone to explore ones mind and body in the realms outside of pure wakefulness. Yoga Nidra is a restorative yoga practice in which the practitioner rests in savasana (or whichever position they find themselves most comfortable) as they are navigated through a Nidra meditation into the layers of the self. In this process, we move into the lower wave states of the brain whereby deep healing and transformation can arise.

This course first takes the student through the fundamentals of Yin Yoga and into the mindfulness of the practice to help cultivate a more conscious presence as a teacher. One dives into the inner workings of how the brain is wired and how we are able to change our unconscious patterns, belief systems and behaviors that keep us from living our most embodied and empowered lives both as yoga teachers and otherwise. Secondly, the course moves into Yoga Nidra and how to harness the powerful healing potentials in the space  between wakefulness and sleep. When diving into these two disciplines together in an intentional and intelligent way, the student leaves the training with new tools and approaches to deepen your students’ experience with effective techniques. The final part of the Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra course explores the art of facilitation. While it is one thing to learn what Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra are in theory, it is very different facilitating and serving the experience to others. The teacher must have both true experiential knowledge of the practices and a deep understanding of the functional impacts on the body in order to teach these practices to others in a safe and comfortable way.
