What is Yoga Nidra: An Introduction

~ Being comfortable with Being ~

Written by Francesca Abbott

There is often a misconception that Yoga Nidra is ‘Sleep Yoga’. Which isn’t necessarily completely untrue – Yoga Nidra definitely improves our sleep – however it alludes that Yoga Nidra is a practice where we simply just sleep! This is not the aim of Yoga Nidra.

Yoga Nidra is a state of Being. I write Being with a capital B because it is important to emphasise here. Being is different things to different people; it could be simply walking in nature, watching a sunrise, dancing in your bedroom, meditating, playing an instrument etc… It can be anything to help you cultivate a sense of presence in your life, a state where time stands still and you are really at One with whatever you are doing and whatever circumstance you find yourself in on that given day. This is Being.

In our Yoga Nidra training we delve into this idea of Being, and how to cultivate it within a Yoga Nidra practice. How to teach students safely and how to enhance that state of Being into your everyday life.

Yoga Nidra is a practice where we surrender into what we already are, it’s an effortless practice that on the surface physical level can be extremely relaxing. Ultimately we want to take students into a state of ‘Being’.

When we allow ourselves to simply Be, we let go of the past and stop worrying about the future, we are truly in the moment. This is the essence of any mindfulness practice and what the practice of Yoga Nidra can bring us to. We create more presence, more joy and simply more living into our everyday lives. As we rest and surrender into Yoga Nidra, we begin to connect to this quality of simply Being.

Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice, where we aim to access the space between sleeping and consciousness, this is often called the Hypnagogic state.

Yoga: knowingly awake as the unconditioned, ineffable Mystery that connects all of life

Nidra: across all states of consciousness: waking and sleeping

We are aiming to access the space between sleeping and consciousness, so therefore we will be moving through different states of consciousness i.e. WAKING – HYPNAGOGIC – DEEP SLEEP.  But to do this we must first accept that the power lays in the “being”.

So the question is, are you ready to find the power within to just Be? If so then you are in the right place!
