How To Start Meditating

~A Few Tips To Get Going~

By Anna Caldwell

Are you a beginner meditator? Do you still have questions swirling around your mind about how to meditate? How to integrate meditation into your life? Perhaps you are already a yoga teacher and looking to deepen your meditation offerings for your students? If this sounds like you, here are a few tips to get you started (or rebooted) on your meditation journey and overcome any obstacles currently in your way.

The very best advice I was ever given in beginning my journey to meditation many years ago was….JUST START! Even if you sit for 3 minutes only to notice your thoughts spiraling out of control the entire time, this is meditation. Any time you can allow the time to simply sit and observe yourself is a wonderful mediation practice. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Tip #1: Release Expectations. Expectation leads to apprehension, which is the opposite of meditation! You may immediately feel more relaxed after meditating or you may feel frustrated and ready to abandon your efforts. Either way, don’t give up! The timeline of receiving the benefits of meditation is different for everyone, yet assured nonetheless.

Tip #2: Just Go With It. Don’t worry if you cannot sit quietly and empty your mind—most people can’t! When starting out, don’t get hung up on the depth of your meditation practice. Simply taking the sacred space and time for yourself to cultivate meditation is enough. Everything else will come.

Tip #3: Integrate The Practice Into Your Life. As you begin to find more inner stillness, try to find ways in which you can bring this energy into other areas of your life. Perhaps you can bring this meditative quality further into your yoga or pranayama practice, or perhaps you may begin to bring in the energy of your meditation to the park as you take your daily walk.
