Yin Yoga is a vast world to explore, extending so far beyond the physical asana practice we see popping up in yoga studios across the planet. Put simply, this practice is a multifaceted approach of weaving the energy of Yin and the tradition of Yoga together through the 5 dimensions of the body: energetic, emotional, mental, spiritual and physical. Needless to say, there are many ways in which to define and understand this practice of yin yoga. First, we must pose the question: “What are you coming to practice for?”

Training in Yin Yoga, Functional Anatomy & Chinese Medicine is first and foremost, a journey home to the Self. When one embarks on the journey to begin training in these concepts, one is met with no choice but to embark on the spiraling inward journey to the soul.

Functional anatomy, in essence, awards the trainee with the fundamentals and foundations to teach Yin Yoga safely. We learn that there is no proper alignment in Yin Yoga the way there is in more yang-style practices such as Hatha or Ashtanga. Yes, we learn to adapt the practice to the practitioner and the myriad ways the human form can vary. Bio-individuality and skeletal variation are at the crux of this concept, when we learn to feel in our bones that it is not what the practice looks like but what it feels like in the 5 bodies.

Yin Yoga is the fusion of the ancient tradition of Daoist Yin and Yang Theory with the tradition of yoga. Immersing into the five elements of Chinese Medicine, we become intimate with the Yin and Yang energy at play within all things.

Our 100hr Yin Yoga, Functional Anatomy and Chinese Medicine YTT course at Shanti Atma Yoga is broken up into two parts, one for the functional approach and one for the energetic approach to Yin Yoga. The former dives into the art of teaching and understanding the importance of bio-individuality in the human body as it pertains to Yin Yoga. Our students dive deep into the fascial system of the body, working with target areas and muscle groups within each asana, along with the essential art of propping unique to this style of practice. Within the secondary approach, we will break down the essence of the energetic body and how we can teach Yin Yoga from this approach. Breaking down Chinese Medicine theory, Yin Yang theory and the 5 Chinese Elements the student gains new insight as to how we can benefit from yoga and how Qi flows around the body.
