~ How to Chose a Yin Yoga Teacher Training ~

Written by Becky Khalil

There are so many different Yin Yoga teacher training courses out there. Each one being taught in a unique way, dependent on the experience, education and technique of the individual teacher trainer. Even content wise, Yin Yoga is a very deep and complex style of Yoga that dives into two traditions: Taosim and Yoga. Together you have a power couple of ancient philosophy and life science. This is just the beginning, however. We haven’t yet mentioned the deeper dimensions of Yin Yoga which includes physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual.

In this article I will take you through the different dimensions of our Yin Yoga teacher training courses so that you can get a feel for which course may be best for you and where you are in your journey.

  1. Physical Approach to Yoga with Yin Roots: Yin Yoga, Functional Anatomy and Chinese Medicine

The physical approach is the best place to start if you don’t have much experience with Yin Yoga. Why?

Learning the foundations of Yin Yoga and how to apply these to your teaching, even if you have been teaching a while. Discover the link between Chinese Medicine and Yoga asana, moving from the physical to the energetic dimensions of the practice. So why train in Yin Yoga with Functional Anatomy and Chinese Medicine?

The Course

Yin Yoga is an intelligent style of Yoga that embodies two similar ancient traditions: Taoism and Yoga. Bypassing the modern style of Yin Yoga adaptation of Paul Grilley, Yin Yoga is deeply rooted in connection of body – mind – spirit – soul with the universal way of Tao while detaching from the Asmita, the ego mind.

Yin Yoga is a complex style when taught properly and it deserves the credit it is due. Learning to move the body in a way that is unique, comfortable and resonant with each individual is paramount in the beginning stages of practice. Understand the anatomy of the body on a functional level will equip you to do so. The Chinese Medicine takes you into the roots of Yin Yoga, promoting intelligence from the ancient tradition upon which Yin Yoga stems from.

2. Energetic Approach to Yin Yoga : Pranayama, Meditation and Mindfulness

When you are ready to move beyond the asana and go a little deeper into Yoga then Pranayama organically is the next steps, as per the Yoga system of Patanjali. So why train in Yin Yoga with Pranayama, Meditation and Mindfulness?

The Course

Develop your teaching one step further by learning the power of Pranayama and how to integrate this into your classes.  Visit the pillars of meditation and take a look into a Monk’s mind.

Beyond the asana is the practice of Pranayama. One aim of asana is to prepare the body for pranayama and meditation which is the natural evolution of Yoga practice. Pranayama is the expansion of Prana throughout the body and also a bridge to meditation practices, that are simultaneously deeply rooted in mindful being. Learning how to practice (or teach) these techniques properly and safely is the next step beyond asana, taking you into a new experience, closer to your truest Self.

      3. Mental Approach to Yin Yoga :  Neuroplasticity and Mindfulness

As you develop your practice of mindfulness, pranayama and meditation, interwoven with physical asana based on functional anatomy, it becomes clear that Yin Yoga has a profound effect on the mind. So shouldn’t we be taking more notice of what we are feeding the mind? So why train in Yin Yoga with Neuroplasticity and Mindfulness?

The Course

Explore Yin Yoga from a mental perspective,  diving into the landscape of the neuroplasticity of the brain and what its relationship to the Yin Yoga experience is.

Yin Yoga has many dimensions of the practice. We start with the physical and organically move into the deeper realms of practice as we evolve. When moving beyond asana, through Pranayama and into meditation and mindfulness, the practitioner may be ready to enter into the mental landscape. Everything we think, feel, experience and are exposed to imprint our minds and so why should teaching Yoga be any different? When we look into the mental landscape and how the way in which we teach wires the brain of our students, the experience of Yin Yoga changes.

      4. Emotional Approach Yin Yoga : Emotional Intelligence and Essential Oils

Becoming master over our mind through the wisdom of experience, without reaction, is home to Buddhism. While also an ancient Indian tradition that has similar aims and philosophies as Yoga, it is not directly the same as Yoga philosophy. However this doesn’t make it any less important. When we deepen our practice, travelling further and further into our unconscious patterns to discipline our practice and seek enquiry, we enter the space of emotional intelligence. So why train in Yin Yoga with Emotional Intelligence and Essential Oils?

The Course

Dive into the emotional intelligence of the human brain and body, and how to marry the essential oils with the Yin Yoga practice to promote a healthy and holistic Yoga experience.

Emotions are a huge part of what make up the living human being. We experience emotions as energy flowing through us that are transient and impermanent, however how do we cultivate awareness of this to detach from our reactive mode which is unconsciously on autopilot? By learning about Yin Yoga from an emotional space you will be more equipped to be master of your mind and body rather than a slave to its unconscious patterns.

     5. Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra

Yin Yoga is not the only practice of Yoga that journeys you to the deeper dimensions and into your truest Self. Yoga Nidra is an ancient healing practice that is commonly and widely practice today. Coupled with Yin Yoga and you have the potential for a potent spiritual journey. Why train in Yin Yoga with Yoga Nidra?

The Course

Learn how to diversify your classes by taking your students into that space between waking and sleeping with the power of Yoga Nidra, where mindful meditation, yoga asana and internal health become one.

Yin Yoga is a bridge to meditation and the more introspective aspects of the Yoga practice and experience. One may say it is a stepping stone to Yoga Nidra; the space between wakefulness and sleep where one enters the hypnogogic state of ultimate conscious awareness. When moving through faster paced Yoga asana, how does one shift into this space of lower brain wave frequencies that are largely stimulated by softer experiences? By learning Yin Yoga and Yoga nidra together you will have a pool of sources from two ancient traditions in how to reach the deeper dimensions of body – mind – spirit – soul that reward you with a plethora of health benefits.

There are many different ways that you can come to your Yoga practice. Know that regardless from whichever place you begin, you are bound to develop and evolve on a natural path that is intrinsic to you. So, begin to what your soul is called to.
