Training in Yin Yoga, Neuroplasticity and Mindfulness: The Journey

By Anna Caldwell

Training in Neuroplasticity, Yin Yoga and Mindfulness, means exploring how the brain is wired and how patterns, beliefs and human behavior emerge to form the cycles and reality in which we live. One learns how to use Yin Yoga to harness the conscious power of neuroplasticity by breaking down the components and understanding the intricacies of these disciplines.

What is neuroplasticity and how does this play into the concept of yin yoga? Neuroplasticity is the ability of our brain to recognize, create and form synaptic connections. “What fires together, wires together,” as they say. Science is now proving the plasticity of the human brain, confirming that as we repeat actions and thoughts, we are actually strengthening the neural pathways and ultimately rewiring the structure of our brain. Pretty amazing, right?

But how does all of this play into yin yoga, meditation and mindfulness? Without expanding too much into the science, we learn that the brain operates in different frequencies depending on the activity we are engaged. Our brain is an electrical organ and by frequency, we mean the oscillating electrical voltages by which the brain operates measured in hertz or, frequency per second. We have our highest frequency, gamma waves (15-42 hertz) in which our brain is working in problem solving, deep focus, concentration or those “ah-ha!” moments of creative epiphany. Next come beta waves (12-35 hertz), which characterize our everyday, active mind. Next along comes alpha waves (8-12 hertz), representing the brain state when we are restful, reflective or closing the eyes. Finally come theta waves (4-8 hertz) in our drowsy state and delta waves (1-4 hertz) when we are in deep sleep. When we are able to practice transitioning into alpha and theta frequencies of the brain, as we often do in the true practice of yin yoga asana, we are more open in our subconscious mind. So, the messages we receive, the environment in which we practice and all the other factors that go into curating a yin yoga experience have the potential to form new memories and gradually train the brain to improve focus and wellbeing, among many other benefits.

Training in Yin Yoga and Neuroplasticity, the student is walked through how to use Yin Yoga as a positive tool to rewire our brain, both in theory of science and teaching methodology, including the experience of moving from application to practice. In doing so, we not only highlight the fantastic power of our own brain, linking directly to mindfulness theory, but we gain a fundamental understanding of the capabilities and power we hold within our most powerful organ. The part of our body that most definitively shapes who we are and how we function in this world. It is important, then, that we gain practical experience in holding space for others mentally, emotionally and energetically while keeping ourselves and our students safe.

Training in Yin Yoga, Neuroplasticity and Mindfulness with Shanti Atma Yoga is composed of nurturing practice, theory, the art of teaching, asana breakdown and empowering evening practice. Experience is fundamental to learning and as a student, you will be asked to walk through how you can use Yin Yoga as a positive tool to come back into mental balance through the lens of neuroplasticity and mindfulness. In doing this, we not only showcase once again the incredible capacity of our own brain and body to heal, but we directly link meditation and mindfulness into this discipline to fundamentally experience how to harness the conscious power of neuroplasticity.

Exploring communication as a teacher, the art of propping, sequencing and the many other components that comprise the vast world that is yin yoga will make a confident and powerful teacher. Shanti Atma Yoga’s mission echoes just this, empowering seekers, teachers and leaders to be of deep service to those that they teach by spreading the healing art of yin yoga.
